How To Get A Low Interest Credit Card

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

I was trying to convince myself that I should cut up all of my credit cards because the interest on them is driving me crazy.  If you really stop and think about how long it will take to pay off a balance of a few thousand dollars by just paying the minimum, it’s guaranteed to make you nuts.  Trust me, I did.  Before I went drastic and just got rid of them altogether (because who really wants to do that), I decided to try to get a lower interest rate credit card and transfer my balance.  I get deals in the mail all the time and thought, why not?  Except that all of a sudden, I wasn’t getting deals in the mail for low interest rate credit cards any more.  Thanks a lot, credit crunch!  So, what to do?  I called my Visa customer service department and told them that I was thinking about canceling my card because the interest was too high.  Guess what.  After a little talking, they agreed to lower my interest rate for me.  I couldn’t believe it.  Who knew that I could have gotten a lower interest rate all along if I had only asked.

The moral of this story is, if you want a lower interest rate credit card than the one you have, try talking to the customer service department.  They just might do it for you and then you don’t have the hassle of having to hunt for and apply for a new credit card.  It worked for me.
